Thank you to all of our peace officers who work so bravely and fearlessly to serve and protect our communities in the Puget Sound. We are observing National Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. It is also National Police Week.

Do you know someone who was killed in the line of duty? If so, we grieve with you for your loss and thank you for your service to our community and country.

This is our day to pay our respects to officers who lost their lives or were injured in their jobs. According to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), about 140-160 officers are killed in the line of duty each year and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss.

You may see businesses lower their flags to half staff and some police departments hold their annual law enforcement memorial day ceremony.

The Fraternal Order of Police organize a national memorial service today, and the service is followed by the placement of a memorial wreath at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.
