The Pop Icon Who Died That Was Carrie's Musical Inspiration

December 27, 2016

Carrie Underwood took to Instagram the other day to confess that the late George Michael was one of her musical inspirations.  George, who passed away on Christmas Day at his home in England, was a pop icon who sold over 100 million cds and starting with the group Wham! and then as a solo artist, provided much of the pop sound track of the 1980s.

It's not clear that Carrie ever met George, but it's clear his music had a big influence on Carrie.

I never told him (mainly because I thought I'd freak him out) but #georgemichael has always been such an influence on me. As a child, his was the first voice I could pick out of the sea of voices I heard on the radio. Before I knew anything about him, I knew his voice. As an adult, I cried when I saw him in concert. His songs and his voice helped to teach me how to sing. I will forever regret not letting him know...Thank you, George, for giving the world your gifts...may you rest in peace.
